Learn to recognize these, both with the eye and the ear.
Now, as to the Progression to the Tonic Chord of each of these Inversions of the Dominant Seventh Chord: the Seventh always descends; the Fifth descends, preferably, but it may ascend; the Third always ascends; the Root, when it is not in the Bass, is carried over into the following Chord.
Here is the practical working out: C Major:
Note how beautifully each of these Inversions of the Dominant Seventh Chord leads into a Position or Inversion of the complete Tonic Chord. Make an eye and an ear test of this example.
Now let the student write out the foregoing example complete in each of the Scales specified.
